Biomechanics & PPE

I remember reading about PPE being investigated a few years ago that had the hi-vis applied in such a way to make people stand out better as “people shaped”. I can’t find the research again now, can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Hi Jo,
Dr Martin Langham from West Sussex university was the expert in conspicuity.

I agree a Sam Brown belt depicts the body shape.
Hi-Viz straps on the ankles and wrists work as they depict the movement of the legs for instance on a bicycle.

I hope that helps
Gareth

The go to trade body for HiViz PPE is the Retroreflective Equipment Manufacturers Association and you can find them here

Contact User Perspective - http://userperspective.co.uk/

They were founded by Dr Langham (referenced by Gareth) who is (as far as I'm concerned) the top specialist in this field. I'm unsure how much he is still working, but they will point you at the correct research papers I'm sure.

Well young Saul I’ll have you know that this month my research was presented at an Orthopaedics conference and I worked two days playing with trains – why they don’t just stay on the metal bits!
Saul and other are correct I'm retired (almost) and it was our group that did the work about ten years ago.

The term you are looking for is bio-motion. The standard markings don’t really work – and we can’t find much about their original testing – apart from rumours that different uniforms were put on a dart board in a pub in Kent and people said – “I like that one”. Followed as the evening progressed – you are my best friend and slurred speech!
The issues of marking for night time has been investigated worldwide and generally bio-motion works 3x better.
The issue has been that while people buy the old untested and scientifically dubious ones no one will invest in research.

Daytime visibility is also an issue with no testing and patterns that are actually camouflage patterns. Why people buy them without asking “are they tested” is a mystery. The two tone ones you see received from a US military type who was with me the comment – was wow you guys camouflage your road workers.
Doing some work early this year with my fire arms R&D team we found airport workers with three colours of high vis. Perfect disruptive camouflage and almost identical to army urban camouflage issues in the Soviet Union. It may not be airport ground crew but an early invasion!

Feel free to contact me. Much of my time is voluntary or charity work now so it may take a few days to contact me.
