Summer / Tourism Related Road Safety Interventions

I am looking at a rural B road route that is popular with tourists during the summer, particularly on a weekend. A number of signing/lining/surfacing amendments have previously been implemented and have had some success in reducing the collision rate. However, the collisions that remain tend to be summer/weekend collisions. I was wondering if anyone is aware of any road safety interventions that have been successfully implemented elsewhere to help address summer/weekend collisions? Publicity campaigns is one possible option but I'm unsure on the likely effectiveness. Has anyone used any specific signing treatments during the summer months before? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi Ryan, have you studied the type of vehicles that are being involved in these collisions? The reason I ask, is because of the study of the A537 Macclesfield to Buxton Road (Cat and Fiddle Pass), which was known as "Britain's Most Dangerous Road". However, if you take motorcycle collisions out, it's nothing like as bad. There are similar roads in North Wales and for me the North Norfolk coastal road. On a sunny weekend you get a mix of slow moving tourists (many elderly) and often high speed motorcyclists. If you find motorcycles do feature highly in your figures, you may need to run a motorcycle specific campaign. If so, talk to the Shiny Side Up Partnership: https://shinysideup.co.uk/

Dear Ryan,

I am pleased to see that you have at least one suggestion. It is extremely difficult to know what might help as you have not presented your accident study or its results. Of course, that isnít easy via a forum such as this. Cannot you obtain peer review from within your own organisation - or doesnít it have the ability to provide that? (A not unusual circumstance, in my experience.)

Martin - Thank you for your response. There are a couple of motorcyclists but not huge numbers (your link is useful, thanks). Appears to be more of a car driver issue. I need to review surfacing / lining / signing etc but these elements have been looked at before and I was keen to widen the field of possible ideas. Thanks again for the link.

Andrew - Thank you for your response. Appreciate it is difficult without seeing the details etc. At this stage was just really after possible avenues for exploration. All work is subject to peer review so I should get further ideas that way. Just keen to widen the ideas net as far as possible. Thanks again for replying.
