Migrant data on road safety

A colleague is doing an International Migrants Needs Assessment for the city. Is there research on road collisions/casualties in relation to migrants/immigrants to UK available - if so where? Many thanks!

I'm not aware of any research, but our Stats 19 data shows a general trend of young children been run over in areas of dense housing within Asian communities (not necessarily migrants though). Typically, the streets are terraced houses with lines of on-street parking - the children run from between parked cars and are hidden from view.
Targeted education seems to be reducing accidents, although it is still an ongoing issue to some extent.

Migrant data on road safety

Unfortunately I do not currently have information to help with this study, however, I would be very interested to know the outcome of the research, as we are very interested in the same question here in Ireland. I work for an organisation that helps refugees who have recently entered the country, both North and South of the border. This issue has been flagged in a recent meeting that we had with a minister in the Republic of Ireland. Given that many of the communities where our new potential citizens have been allocated accommodation are quite rural in nature, there is often a need to acquire a driving licence quite quickly. It has been reported that issues like the language barrier and previous driving experiences in their home countries are creating difficulties for safe road use among our refugee population. We are very keen to understand the problem so that we can explore possible interventions that can alleviate the issue.
I look forward to reading your report.
Kindest regards

Migrant data on road safety

Hi Keith,

I do know that some years ago Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership did a study on collisions involving migrant workers, as they have a high number of migrants working in the agricultural sector. Whether they did this themselves or pulled in info from other sources, I am not sure.

Cheers,

Steve B

The work described by Joe Walker in Kirklees is echoed by research we carried out for Oldham MBC in similar residential areas with high proportions of Asian families. Interventions included working with the local mosque to preach against speeding, recruiting local road safety champions from the community and regenerating local parks to create safer play areas and routes to school. Unfortunately like many road safety initiatives there was lack of funding for sound evaluation.

Many thanks for your responses - from other contacts as well I am pretty sure it is impossible to track if road casualties are migrants or not from information captured. As suggested the commercial data analysis based on postcode etc probably is the closest - other than local knowledge! This was a quick hit so having to tell public health colleague we haven't data and others in same situation.
