Comparible Areas

Is anyone aware of the availability of a list of national pre-defined comparable areas between counties or local authorities in terms of road safety? i.e. comparable in terms of geography / road networks / road mileage / population / demographics / local authority expenditure etc. I am looking for comparable areas to get a good indication of performance and trend identification and measure the effectiveness of road safety education and interventions. Many thanks for any help.

Stephen,

Swindon is part of an authority "family" with comparible characteristics that includes; Bracknell Forest, Darlington, Derby, Halton, Luton, Medway, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Redcar & Cleveland, South Glos, Stockton on Tees, Telford & Wrekin, Thurrock & Warrington. I'm afraid I can't see which LA you work for but on the off-chance it might be one of these, the list might be of assistance!

Stephen, a couple of links that might be of use:

https://www.cipfastats.net/resources/nearestneighbours/ - CIPFRA Nearest Neighbour model using many demographic indicators to find similar authorities.

Hi Stephen,

As Jeff has already linked above, the network classification system which we at RSA / Agilysis have developed for this purpose is available to the road safety community via MAST Online. It takes into account almost all the variables you mention, and others besides.

As it happens, we're currently in the process of overhauling and updating it in advance of the release of the next MAST update with the full 2016 stats later this summer. If you'd like to know more about HANCS or how to access MAST then please feel free to get in touch with me.

Bruce
