Average travelling distance calculator

I have been asked to work out the average distance that our children travel to school every day. Do you know of any software (ideally free) that I can use to calculate average distance from a list of over 500 postcodes? Thank you so much for your help!

If you dont have access to a GIS package, then you could try the following, which allows you calculate the distance between 2 postcodes for up to 200 pairs (you could split your list into batches):

Probably need to make sure your postcodes follow the correct format first.

Have you asked your school admissions team if they have access to any measuring tools for the purposes of determining distances? We use shortest walking routes for ranking admission applications and so the same system is used to determine eligibility for transport. The system we use can batch process addresses. However if your admissions team use 'as the crow flies' distances to rank applications this may not work for you.

Try using Googlemap directions option which allows you to identify pedestrian routes and distances from an address to a destination(i.e. school).
it may be slightly time consuming for the 500 addresses or postcodes to input into a database.
