The Road Safety Trust’s 2026 poll, conducted by More in Common among 2,088 adults in Great Britain, reveals widespread public support for stronger road safety measures. The findings indicate that the Government has considerable public backing to implement ambitious policies to reduce road deaths and serious injuries.

Six measures tested received majority support, including eyesight tests every three years for drivers aged 70 and over (81%), graduated licensing for new drivers (71%), and a minimum three-to-six-month learning period before the practical driving test (66%). Support also extended to mandatory safety technology in new cars and lowering the drink-drive limit in England and Wales, both backed by 64% of respondents. Meanwhile, 73% supported temporarily suspending licences following failed roadside drink or drug tests.

Half of respondents believed road deaths had increased over five years, despite official figures showing slight annual decreases since 2022. The findings highlight opportunities for policymakers to pursue stronger interventions with public support.
