The current regulations contain a number of exemptions from the requirement for annual testing for certain specialised heavy vehicles, which can weigh up to 44 tonnes.

In this consultation the Governemnt proposed that it is sensible that all heavy vehicles should undergo roadworthiness testing to identify defects, unless there is a clear reason why this is not practical or proportionate.

The responses were broadly in favour of the principle of introducing mandatory roadworthiness testing for specialised heavy vehicles, and as such the Government looks set to introduce mandatory testing for these vehicles.
