The first data released since the month Covid-19 restrictions were introduced shows a significant increase in the number of people cycling across Scotland in 2020.

Statistics released by Cycling Scotland reveal that between March and August 2020, 43% more cycling journeys were recorded compared to the same period in 2019.

A rise of 0.6% in people cycling in March – covering the period before lockdown was introduced in Scotland on March 23 – was followed by increases of 68% in April, 77% in May, 63% in June, 44% in July and 33% in August compared to the same months in 2019.

The figures are based on data from 46 automatic cycle counters.

Six locations – including one in Dundee and another in Dunfermline’s, saw increases of more than 100%, with one counter in Glasgow showing a 199% rise compared to 2020.

The information was collected as part of the National Monitoring Framework, managed by Cycling Scotland and funded by Transport Scotland, to monitor cycling rates across the country.
