The project built on earlier research, funded by The Road Safety Trust, addressing Centre Line Removal (CLR), which included a recommendation for more UK trials. Using a-l Before and After method, the current study analysed speed data across nine sites (five Intervention and four Controls) on 20mph and 30mph speed limit roads in East Lothian, in south-east Scotland.

Specifically, there were four Intervention sites and two control sites on 20mph speed limit
roads, while there were one Intervention site and two control sites on 30mph speed limit roads.

The findings are that there was no statistically significant difference between the Intervention and Control sites speeds when the speed data was analysed and statistically tested. This was true for both 20mph speed limit Intervention and Control sites and likewise for the 30mph sites.

The findings were, however, nuanced. When exploring speeds driven across the 24-hour day, the highest speeds were found to be between midnight and seven AM. With this disaggregation, the findings showed slightly lower speeds at other periods across the day.

However, it did not negate the overall finding that there was no statistical significance between pre and post Intervention and Control sites at either 20mph or 30mph speed limits including peak and offpeak periods during the day.
