ParticipantDoes anybody have any experience with tackling the issue of drivers going through fords when water levels too high? What measure have been taken and were they effective?

ParticipantOur local authority had a fatality (vehicle swept away and driver drowned) at a ford more than a decade ago and this had been preceded by several similar incidents – following the fatality electronic water level measuring equipment was installed to relay a message to the local authority of rapidly rising waters. Gates were also installed on either side and LA staff can now respond quickly to close these, preventing drivers from attempting to cross. A local resident objected to the Traffic Regulation Order proposal and a hearing was held to resolve this ( it found in favour of granting the LA the power to close the road). The system has worked effectively since it was commissioned.

ParticipantWill – RSGB Corporate Members Westcotec have done work in this area. Olly Samways presented in a session at National Road Safety Conference. You could contact them direct to explore if there is anything they can assist with. https://www.westcotec.co.uk/flood-system/
