Fair enough – I used this mainly aimed at pedestrians and cyclists this time as 50% of collisions have them at element of fault – stats 19 – here. I’d used static print ads and they changed to digital in city centre. We have had a small version of a digital screen in the city on way from rail station into town and monitored for incidents, not much variation of significance. I’d also done very basic media research on campaigns I’d done and what kind of road user seemed to see what media.. I’ll happily accept it was basic but did get a mates rate bit of research from local Uni psychology – aiming to determine significance of results. My stuff was in region but not statistically significant.
Anyway bus stops best for peds and cyclists – with fair recall from drivers.
It is very limited subtle motion – HA internal colleagues OK’d it and subsequent ones. No budget now for development so basic stuff again.
It’s here: https://www.facebook.com/sharetheroadsbrightonandhove – just posted it for your delight!

Don’t use digital advertising vehicles but do use digital bus stops. Our council has contract with clearchannel allowing them to control advertising on our bus stops. As part of this contract we get a small percentage of time. For a while only I was aware of this so exploited it – but with covid let others know as well as saw as more important. Now lots of us use it. They tend to use static images – same as usual bus stops but with several on a rota. I’ve also used limited animation – putting it through our risk people first. It is very effective – I think – for the check your lights campaign for drivers and riders in the autumn clocks back. My graphics team also did a simple but effective anti-distraction ad.
I have read up a lot on this and talked to a couple of Uni psychology people. I’ve not had complaints or notice incidents rising in the areas deployed. Recognise potential of distraction – and to an extent wanted to engage with local newspaper if it raised a story on this – but they didn’t.

Many thanks. Doing this mainly as response to concerned SCPs and trainers working at schools – we don’t see casualties attributed to this. Urban environment less likely although did use DIMMS family demo sled at Safety in Action and other events to show even at 30 significant impact.
I am going ahead with trial at 6 schools where our SCPs / trainers will be working in New Year – will try and do a little evaluation. I’ve got plasticised height charts from Room 9 media – the basics – but if it works will look to use redesign to add more info onto it ref services and risks.

Good grief Gill – you’ve returned to the fold, good to see. We also use Stop, Look, Listen with the addition of stand back between the Stop and Look, to avoid people getting clouted by bus and HGV mirrors etc. I give out a bookmark with simple graphics to anyone interested – with S,SB,L, L symbols one side and distraction/visibility etc info the other side. Works well with Uni students and most – don’t get littered post events as far as I’ve experienced. I’m just updating for the college/Uni return – let me know if interested. Our Child Ped trainers – still got limited programme in primary – use similar.
    Trust all well with you.
Keith – Matt’s moved on to higher things!

Hi Rebecca – luckily for me our Highways team giving the permission was in adjacent room when first set out on this job 14yrs ago, along with traffic control who have traffic/car park info signs etc. They’ve allowed me to use the 3 month temp signage, which I have in many campaigns – A2 signs, Al channel backed, 8.5ft above surface on our standard lamp columns. I’ve done basic media evaluation for campaigns and have found them OK – best seen by peds or cyclists. I’m moving to composite panels as more durable – I tend to re-use some of campaigns – Focus/Look/Listen for peds crossing – door opening in front bike – and some others. Correx embrittles here after a couple of 3 month sessions and if you don’t have AL channel backing collapses after while.
I’ve had OK for some TSRGD campaign wording to be used on our VMS/car park signs – at one stage looked like DfT would be more flexible in allowable useage but this wasn’t clarified….
If you have digital bus stop advertising in your area it’s great to get in on contract time – assuming council is placing with commercial – to ensure you can use part time for campaigns etc. We had this for good while with Clearhannel – I gave it over to Public Health for Covid and haven’t grabbed back yet. They have great awareness from public – especially pedestrians but in dark works well for drivers too, at stops.
Anyway – good luck – much more effective than many options we have for campaign messaging – mainly because only we can do there and you can put up appropriate message to locality.
