Brighton and Hove City Council

A city at the forefront of sustainable transport, Brighton & Hove is developing and encouraging public transport and walking and cycling faster than anywhere else in the country.

With these developments, the relationship and interaction between the different ways in which people use the roads is also changing. The City Council have made the development of a Safer City an integral part of all aspects of council work.

Most relevant of these is the work of the Road Safety Team, which underpins the expansion of sustainable travel by working to anticipate how safety may be affected by these changes. Their work also analyses past crashes and collisions and whatcaused them in order to reduce risk and injury.

We have established effective partnerships both within our own council departments and with other partners both locally and regionally. We share expertise and resources, working closely together with our neighbouring authorities and with Sussex Police and the Fire and Rescue and Health Services in our common aim to reduce the number of casualties and collisions that are suffered on the city’s roads.

We are working with almost every school in the city to provide practical road safety training and educational resources to enable and encourage children and teenagers to use the roads and public transport safely and with confidence. We believe that this early education will provide the foundation for a lifetime’s safe travel.

The School Travel Programme helps schools to plan every aspect of travel to and from school for students and staff. It also offers practical measures with the construction of highway improvements and installation of cycle racks and other facilities to enable people to make real choices in how they travel.

We are not complacent and are very aware that there are an almost infinite number of variables involved in the business of road safety. However, we are planning some thorough and often innovative work in pursuit of our overall aim to reduce casualties and collisions and to make our roads safer for everyone.
