School crossing patrols (SCPs) in Leicestershire are sharing their expertise with school children by helping out at pedestrian and cyclist training sessions.
The aim is to get SCPs more involved in school activities and support the current work of road safety tutors while allowing children to learn new skills from a familiar face.
Following a successful pilot scheme this initiative now operates in 40 schools across the county and is well regarded by schools and patrollers alike.
The project is a regional ‘first’ and already attracting attention from other local authorities. It is helping to give children the skills that will encourage them and their parents to walk or cycle on the school journey, rather than travelling by car.
Nigel Horsley, road safety team manager, said: “The role of the school crossing patrol is an important and valuable one.
“Our patrollers do a terrific job in all weathers and traffic conditions helping to make the school journey easier and safer for pupils and parents.
“They are respected members of the community and it seems a natural progression to offer additional road safety work. They help greatly with assisting our road safety tutors with practical training and education.”
