North Yorkshire County Council through the 95 Alive York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership has recruited the help of every doctor, dentist and children’s centre in the county to ensure the correct child seats are being used in vehicles.

Doctors, dentists and children’s centres across North Yorkshire have joined a campaign to help keep babies and children safe in vehicles.

The campaign by 95 Alive – The York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership – follows the findings of a national survey that on average more than half the children across the UK are not being carried in cars properly.

The Partnership’s mascot, the Seatbelt Sheriff, was used to help get across the message that the right seat used at the right time can save lives and prevent injuries.

The Sheriff appears on a series of height charts and posters which have been sent out to more than 250 GP surgeries, dental practices and children’s centres.

The Seatbelt Sheriff has been working in schools alongside Junior Road Safety Officers to encourage children to make sure they wear their seat belts and use car seats and also to encourage adults in the car to buckle up too. More than 5,300 “deputies” have been sworn in to work alongside Junior Road Safety Officers in schools throughout North Yorkshire.
