The GrandDriver Scheme

Organisation: Suffolk County Council

Since 2006 Suffolk County Council's road safety team has been working with older drivers and Cranfield University to develop a package aimed at assisting older drivers to refresh their skills and knowledge and to safely continue their driving careers.

The GrandDriver Scheme received funding from the Department for Transport in 2007 which enabled Suffolk County Council to carry out a programme of research and evaluation in order to find the most effective methods of assisting older drivers.

As a result of the funding, and the help of almost 1,000 older drivers, the council is now offering a programme of assessment, education and training.

The programme includes a questionnaire and Driver Diary to be completed at the outset, attending a refresher workshop, optional practical training with a specialist trainer, and completing the questionnaire and Driver Diary again three months after initial registration. Participants also receive a personal driver profile which includes feedback.

The cost of participation is £10 which includes the driver profile, refresher workshop and information folder. Practical training can be arranged using the council’s expert panel of Approved Driving Instructors at a cost of £25 per hour.
